When working with co-occurring diagnoses, an integrated approach that treats both the mental health and substance use issues simultaneously is necessary. This may include a combination of therapy, medication, and support groups.
I have extensive experience working with teams and in facilities, so I can help navigate the difficult process of making decisions around what steps to take next. I believe, for the most part, that those suffering from addiction are self-medicating mental health issues. So for me, that means asking the question, “How has this helped you?” and moving forward with compassion and accountability to help the individual (couple or family) make the best decision to support their sobriety (if indicated) and mental health.
